ABA is a therapeutic approach underpinned by the scientific principles of learning theory. It uses carefully designed assessment procedures to create individualised programs to both reduce problematic behavior such as aggression and tantrums while increase socially significant behavior such as communication, social skills and daily living skills. Learning is often conducted in the natural environment i.e. home to ensure the most meaningful and durable change.
VB falls under the ‘umbrella’ of ABA and analyses language by it’s function (i.e. why we use different words) versus form (i.e. what the words are). By teaching language across different ‘verbal operants’ we can ensure children are using their language effectively e.g. they can say/sign/press “water” on a device when they feel thirsty vs just being able to label a picture of water.
Everything we do is classed as behavior. ABA targets expressive language, receptive language, social skills, play skills, daily living skills, food selectivity, toilet training, emotional regulation and so much more!
Therapy sessions typically occur in the home where the child spends the most time, or in the daycare/school setting. Community sessions can also be facilitated to work on important targets.
A typical therapy session looks like a lot of play and fun carefully embedded with frequent learning opportunities. Depending on the needs of the learner, more structured table time may be included but everything will follow the learner’s motivation to ensure engagement and a constantly evolving program.
We currently work with children from 18 months to 12 years of age.
